Foreclosures attorneys are a MUST HAVE!

When I tell people I primarily concentrate on bankruptcy law and foreclosure law in Chicago and surrounding suburbs the response is always the same. “Wow you must be busy!” The truth is we are busy at The Lawson Law Group trying to help people save their homes, get out of debt and build wealth. While I’m glad to be able to help serve so many in my community it sometimes makes me sad. I’m sad because for all those I help there are so many not getting the help and suffering in silence. There is no moratorium on foreclosures.

signing-document_~pgi0443As you may have heard, Bank of America Corp. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. have halted tens of thousands of foreclosures days after Ally Financial Inc.’s GMAC Mortgage did the same.  The lenders voluntarily halted foreclosures to evaluate if there were errors due to “robo-signing“. “Robo-signers” are bank middle managers who sign the paperwork that allowed banks to repossess homes that are in default, without properly reviewing the underlying documents they were signing. Of course this happened only after these practices became public. Read more

You want to be wealthy? Then get out of debt!

ist2_11038062-time-for-change-clockMy post are typically longer but this one will be short and sweet. Most of us are trying to figure out the road to financial freedom or wealth. There is no way to become wealthy while in debt for the average person. Debt limits your resources. You need resources in order to build wealth. Your greatest resource to building wealth is your income. If your income is being used to pay debt as opposed to investing to make your income grow then you will not become wealthy. Unless of course you hit the lotto. Well you probably have a better chance to be struck by lightening than to hit the lotto so forget about that. Read more

Debt is a headache. Bankruptcy is the tylenol.

pilolaHaving to much debt is a real headache.  And bankruptcy, whether chapter 7 or chapter 13, can be your tylenol. It is nothing wrong with popping a pill to get rid of a headache. We all have done it. But have you ever considered what’s making your head ache. Have you asked yourself questions like: Am I sleepy? Am I hungry? Do I need glasses?  You see, something caused your headache and while the aspirin may relieve the pressure in your head for the time, the headache will likely come back until you solve the underlying problem. Should I use a debt settlement company or file for bankruptcy to get out of debt?

honest-abe_~k0282382Have you heard the term, “if it sounds too good to be true, it is”? Great. Well in my opinion, this applies to these so called debt settlement companies.  While I am sure there may be a few success stories from people using these companies, I don’t know of one personally.  Instead I have heard many complaints from clients who have wasted thousands of dollars on these “settlement” plans before having to turn to bankruptcy because of lawsuits and garnishments. Chicago Bankruptcy Attorney comments on Why We Blog

cuore_4I personally believe that the most important thing you can have is an education. If you take the time to learn and educate yourself then you can do and be whatever you want. If you feel that your spiritual life is disconnected then educate yourself on the spirit or religion and you will likely the find the connection you are looking for.  If you feel frustrated about the on goings in the world then dig deeper. Maybe an understanding of the underlying issue may make you less frustrated. Or maybe through your education you possibly learn that feeling frustrated in a normal human emotion and you allow yourself to accept the feeling with gratuity. Read more

Chapter 13 bankruptcy can stop a foreclosure.

0 Comments | This entry was posted on Jul 23 2010

539In this country we are still experiencing historical rates of foreclosure. Unfortunately, many people don’t know what to do when they receive the letter from the mortgage company threatening foreclosure. First, don’t panic. Second, reach out for help. Most of us, including myself, seem to run and hide at the first sign of trouble.  The truth is, in the words of one of my favorite R&B singers, Teddy Pendergrass, “You can run but you can’t hide.” Face the problem head on. You have options. One option is to enter into a payment arrangement with the mortgage company. Read more

dollar_rainPresident Obama has expanded the HAMP program to include a new program called HAFA.  HAFA stands for Home Affordable Foreclosure Alternatives. For the purposes of this blog I am going to assume that you already understand what a deed-in-lieu and short sale are. However, you can check back in a couple of days for more details on these alternatives. This two options are for people who are not trying to save their home from foreclosure. We will still have a chapter 13 bankruptcy as a viable option to save your home from foreclosure. HAFA is for people who are going to give up their home due to the foreclosure and an inability or desire to pay the mortgage. Read more

Will filing chapter 7 bankruptcy ruin my credit?

0 Comments | This entry was posted on Jul 06 2010

arrowsThis is always one of the first questions I hear from a person considering bankruptcy. It’s funny though when I ask what is your credit score, the person does not know. Actually funny is not the best description but you get my drift. To be clear, in most instances, yes filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy is going to hurt your credit score. But you need to understand credit to understand that nothing is permanent. Read more

bill-rights_~k0782449I know that this is not a bankruptcy issue but I still   thought it was interesting enough to post on my blog.  Mr. McDonald that brought this lawsuit wanted to keep a handgun in his home to protect him and his family. Well he go it!!! “In another dramatic victory for firearm owners, the Supreme Court has ruled unconstitutional Chicago, Illinois’ 28-year-old strict ban on handgun ownership, a potentially far-reaching case over the ability of state and local governments to enforce limits on weapons,” CNN reports.
